Dr. Sandy Newes is a licensed clinical psychologist. She directs Clear View Psychological Services in Asheville, North Carolina; an agency that combines traditional psychological services with adventure and wilderness activities for adolescents, adults, and families. A long-standing advocate of strengthening the clinical-field team, Sandy has a unique ability to teach about complex clinical issues using clear and understandable language, along with relevant examples. She is an excited and passionate facilitator, and genuinely enjoys helping to create interesting experiences that help empower front-line staff to better meet the needs of struggling adolescents and their families. |
Sandy has been working in the wilderness and adventure therapy field for 10 years; currently providing psychological assessment services, program development consultation, research and evaluation, and clinical supervision for a number of different programs. Recently, Sandy participated in a year-long training around substance abuse, and her other clinical specialties include working with trauma, self-harm and suicidality, learning disorders, behavioral and emotional dysregulation, and relationship issues. Dr. Newes received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Penn State University, where she specialized in the application of clinical theory, assessment, and research to adventure/wilderness therapy. She has been the Chair of the Therapeutic Adventure Professional Group (TAPG) of the Association for Experiential Education (AEE), and remains active in AEE leadership. She is also an active member of the Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Industry Council (OBHIC), and participates in a number of efforts designed to raise the overall level of service that is provided to adolescents and their families in this field. Dr. Newes has presented and published widely on adventure/wilderness therapy and co-edited with Dr. Bandoroff a book entitled "Coming of Age: The Evolving Field of Adventure Therapy".
In her free time, Sandy kayaks whitewater as often as she can, goes to see live music frequently, mountain bikes, travels, and tries to slow down enough to do yoga regularly.
